Assessing the Provision of Networked Services: ERIC as an Example
نویسنده
چکیده
ERIC is an important component of the U.S. Department of Education’s dissemination activity. It has been a source of innovation, and is a powerful tool that supports a range of user services. However, largescale adoption of the Internet into the program has lead to a fragmented ERIC that finds its greatest value, service, marginalizing its biggest product, the ERIC database. This chapter examines key components of ERIC for assessment and proposes models, key questions and solutions for improving ERIC. The paper suggests that an experiential evaluation approach, combined with deductive modeling, may offer one way to redesign a program such as ERIC. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH R. David Lankes [email protected] works in the area of digital reference and education information. He completed his Ph.D. from Syracuse University, School of Information Studies. He is the co-founder of the AskERIC service, and principle investigator of the Gateway to Educational Materials (GEM) and the Virtual Reference Desk (VRD) projects as well as director of the ERIC Clearinghouse on Information & Technology. He has also served as a visiting scholar to Harvard's Graduate School of Education. Additional background information can be found at: http://www.askeric.org/~rdlankes .

Studying literature on e-readiness assessment reveals that numerous studies have been conducted on assessing countries’ e-readiness -a macro perspective- but few have attempted to evaluate it from a micro perspective. In addition, most studies is done on micro level of e-readiness pertain to e-readiness assessment of small and medium en-terprises (SMEs).The present study is the first attempt to...
متن کاملDesigninga Neuro-Sliding Mode Controller for Networked Control Systems with Packet Dropout
This paper addresses control design in networked control system by considering stochastic packet dropouts in the forward path of the control loop. The packet dropouts are modelled by mutually independent stochastic variables satisfying Bernoulli binary distribution. A sliding mode controller is utilized to overcome the adverse influences of stochastic packet dropouts in networked control system...
متن کاملModelling and Compensation of uncertain time-delays in networked control systems with plant uncertainty using an Improved RMPC Method
Control systems with digital communication between sensors, controllers and actuators are called as Networked Control Systems (NCSs). In general, NCSs encounter with some problems such as packet dropouts and network induced delays. When plant uncertainty is added to the aforementioned problems, the design of the robust controller that is able to guarantee the stability, becomes more complex. In...
متن کاملStructural Properties of Multirate Sampled-Data Systems
The application of Networked Control Systems (NCS) in which sensory and control signals are transmitted via shared data communication networks, is growing significantly and these systems have been the subject of research during the last decade. On the other hand, multirate sampled data systems have been investigated since a long time. In this paper, conditions under which a networked control sy...
متن کاملNeural-Smith Predictor Method for Improvement of Networked Control Systems
Networked control systems (NCSs) are distributed control systems in which the nodes, including controllers, sensors, actuators, and plants are connected by a digital communication network such as the Internet. One of the most critical challenges in networked control systems is the stochastic time delay of arriving data packets in the communication network among the nodes. Using the Smith predic...
